"Wow, are you always such an asshole, or do you just try extra hard when I'm around?" Sungyeol stalked out of the cafe before Woohyun thought to stop him, the hem of his jacket narrowly missing hitting Woohyun in the face as he turned sharply on his heel.

Woohyun stared after him for a long moment, sitting twisted in his seat, before turning back to the table and leaning back in the chair in exasperation. "I don't get it. What just happened?"

"I could be wrong, but I think he just called you an asshole," Sunggyu answered blandly, turning another page of the newspaper he was reading.

"Yeah, thanks, I got that much," Woohyun said. He sighed, running a hand absentmindedly through his hair. A pair of girls a table over were still giving him strange looks—when he sent an apologetic smile their way, they quickly ducked their heads and avoided meeting his eyes, although he didn't miss the hint of animosity directed towards him. "So I'm an asshole. Okay. Why?"

"Well you are you," Sunggyu said without looking up. He did, however, pick up his coffee and sip it contemplatively. "That's a pretty normal reaction if you ask me."

"I am seriously going to hurt you one day," Woohyun said.

"Maybe you should apologise to Sungyeol first," Myungsoo suggested. Woohyun glanced at the kid. Myungsoo stared back for a moment, before going back to making notes in the margin of his textbook, chewing on the straw of his drink.

"For what—" Woohyun threw up his hands in defeat before scraping back his chair and standing. "Okay, fine, you know what, whatever. I'll just be finding myself some more helpful friends while I'm at it."

"Good luck with that," Woohyun heard Sunggyu mutter after him. Woohyun just rolled his eyes and shoved his arms into the sleeves of his jacket.

-

Sungyeol opened the door on the third ring of the doorbell. When he saw Woohyun standing there, a grimace crossed his face. "I don't want to talk to you," he said plainly, before slamming the door shut—on Woohyun's foot.

"Fuck," Woohyun mouthed quietly. Sungyeol hadn't gone easy on the door. Or his foot, for that matter.

"I thought I just told you that I don't want to see your face," Sungyeol said. He sounded pissed.

Woohyun leaned his head back in exasperation, glancing around the hallway full of closed doors. At least there was no one here to see what was looking to be complete and utter humiliation. Woohyun take a deep breath, and then shoved at the door. It didn't give an inch.

"Actually, you just told me that you didn't want to talk to me. And I can't see your face right now so you can't see mine," Woohyun reasoned.

"You're talking to me right now."

Thank you, captain obvious, Woohyun thought to himself. "So I'm here to apologise for being an unfeeling asshole and to beg your forgiveness," he said instead.

"You don't sound very sorry," Sungyeol said.

Because I still don't know what I did! Woohyun took a very deep breath. "Look, I'll take you out for dinner tonight, alright? I'm sorry for whatever it is I did, and could we talk about it like responsible adults?"

There was a long pause, in which Woohyun was about ready to pull his foot out of the door and kick at it instead before just leaving, when Sungyeol yanked the door open instead. "Fine. Pick me up at six and I'm choosing the restaurant," he said. He kicked Woohyun's foot out of the way and slammed the door shut.

Woohyun stared at it for a few moments before shrugging. He jammed his hands in his pockets and began the trek downstairs. It wasn't until he was halfway home before he wondered if there had been something pained about Sungyeol's expression.

-

After several hours of soul searching and outfit hunting, Woohyun turned up outside of Sungyeol's door at five minutes before six, still not sure why Sungyeol seemed convinced that he was the scum of the earth and Myungsoo kept giving him reproachful 'hyung you should know better' looks. And so, bemused and amused, here he was.

"Ready to go?" Woohyun asked when Sungyeol opened the door.

"Obviously," Sungyeol said.

Once they were both buckled in in Woohyun's car, Sungyeol directed him to a place they'd visited before around twenty minutes away. Woohyun flipped on the radio to a pop music channel, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. When Woohyun glanced his way, Sungyeol was staring out the window.

Woohyun opened his mouth to speak over the newest A-Pink single, but his words got caught on the way Sungyeol's fingers were clenched into fists on his lap. He kept silent for the rest of the drive there.

"For two please," Woohyun said, when they'd parked the car and were inside the restaurant. Sungyeol had been stubbornly quiet the entire time as well, and Woohyun hadn't bothered to push it when Sungyeol so obviously meant it when he'd said he didn't want to talk.

"Follow me please," the waitress said as she smiled and waved them in. She showed them to a table, handing them menus as they settled down in the seats, asking if she could get them anything to drink. The sparkle from the thin chain around her wrist caught his eye, and Woohyun smiled at her.

"That's a lovely bracelet," Woohyun commented. "And just water for now." The waitress gave him a quick smile as she hurried off with a 'thanks' and a remark that she'd be right back.

"I want a cocktail," Sungyeol said, the first words he'd said since Woohyun had picked him up.

"Tell her that when she comes back," Woohyun said, picking up a menu to flip through it. They were seated in a booth by the window. Outside, a light snow had started to fall, catching the glint from the streetlamps in a mirage of green and orange. Inside, Sungyeol was giving him a look that could kill, if looks were able to kill. Woohyun arched an eyebrow.

"What now?" he asked.

"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?" Sungyeol said. His expression was stretched into a grimace.

"Doing what?" Woohyun asked. He could feel irritation grow inside him again, but he forced it down because hell if he was going to give Sungyeol any more ammunition than he had to, regardless. "Okay, since I obviously have no idea what you're talking about, why don't you try explaining it in words like you're supposed to?"

"Because—" Sungyeol cut himself off when he saw the waitress coming back to take their orders, and answered with another narrowed glare instead.

"I'm not saying it again," Sungyeol said when she had left. Woohyun hadn't missed the way she'd smiled a little more brightly at him, and had grinned back.

Woohyun stared blankly at Sungyeol.

Sungyeol stared back. "Do you enjoy this? This...hurting my feelings thing," he said after a moment, his voice suddenly soft.

"I...what?" Woohyun was about to laugh when he caught himself. "Do you seriously think—what the fuck Lee Sungyeol why, I mean, fuck, I like you—"

"You—"

"No not like that, oh christ." Sungyeol stared at him wide-eyed and open mouthed, and Woohyun's words hit him in the face, as well as a niggling hint as to what Sungyeol had been so miffed about this entire time. Woohyun looked away first, and salvaged the last shred of his pride by not burying his face in his hands.

The waitress brought their meals, and Woohyun said a quick thank you but otherwise didn't meet her eye. Neither of them said a word as they ate, and as agreed, Woohyun picked up the bill. He asked Sungyeol if he wanted to stop somewhere first for coffee and dessert, but Sungyeol said no, so Woohyun shrugged and said suit yourself and drove Sungyeol home instead.

He pulled up in front of Sungyeol's place, shifting the car into parking. "I'll come up with you," Woohyun said, putting on the hand brake.

"Don't," Sungyeol said.

"Okay," Woohyun said. He didn't stop Sungyeol when he got out of the car. He didn't walk up with him anyway. He watched him go in, and then turned off the ignition.

"Hello?" Myungsoo said, answering his phone.

"Tell me what just happened," Woohyun demanded.

"Hyung?" A pause. "Oh, I see."

"I think we need to talk."

-

"Wait, so let me get this straight. You're saying that last week Sungyeol, that kid, said, well, that—"

"That he likes you?"

"—and I told him me too and because of that I've been playing with his feelings? By hitting on girls?"

Myungsoo stirred his latte with a spoon, the silverware clinking against the ceramic. "Pretty much," Myungsoo agreed.

Woohyun groaned. "Why is this my life."

"So you've been acting like a jerk by accident instead of on purpose." Myungsoo paused. "Maybe you should tell him that. Before he gets the wrong idea."

"What wrong idea?" Woohyun asked. "I mean, he probably already has the wrong idea, or the right idea? Jesus, Myungsoo, I don't know, you know him better, help me out here. I don't even remember saying that in the first place but considering what I said tonight—" Woohyun stopped short.

"What did you say tonight?" Myungsoo asked curiously.

Woohyun hesitated. "I, well, I said what he thought I said last week," he said lamely.

"I see," Myungsoo said slowly. He picked up his cup and sipped at it, peering at Woohyun over the edge. "No offense hyung, but I like him more than I like you, and as his friend—and your friend, I guess—if you mess this up I'll beat you to a pulp. Or something. I did learn martial arts."

"That's reassuring," Woohyun said. "So how long do I have?"

Myungsoo linefaced at him.

-

Sungyeol opened the door on the third ring of the doorbell. When he saw Woohyun standing there—

"Before you slam the door in my face," Woohyun said quickly, "I have something for you." He thrust the teddy bear and the box of chocolates into Sungyeol's hands, and the flowers into Sungyeol's face. Sungyeol put the flowers and chocolate on a table behind him, stared at Woohyun for a good long second, before throwing the bear into Woohyun's face and slamming the door shut anyway.

"Well so much for that," Woohyun muttered to the bear. A heavy feeling sank to the bottom of his stomach, and a derisive laugh began to bubble its way out through him.

He turned, ready to face defeat, when the door opened behind him and he was hauled in backwards roughly by his collar.

"Just so you know, you're still an asshole," Sungyeol grumbled, but smiling.

"Happy Valentine's to you too," Woohyun said, and handed him the bear.
